In this post, I’ll take you through my personal journey with Supernatural VR fitness, from my first encounter in 2021 to the pivotal moment in August 2024 when it became the cornerstone of my physical and mental transformation. I’ll share how this incredible platform pulled me out of depression, reignited my sense of purpose, and set me on a path to becoming the best version of myself.

How I first discovered Supernatural

In 2021, we bought our daughter an Oculus headset. I played around with it a little bit but didn’t get too into any of the games. My favorite was Beat Saber, and I noticed it felt like a workout to me, so I thought, “Hmm, I wonder if there’s a more fitness-oriented game out there?” I searched the Oculus app store, and that’s when I discovered Supernatural!

Fast Forward to 2024: The Unexpected Spark

Picture this: it’s a typical August morning and I woke up with an unexpected urge. Not for coffee (though that did come later), but for…exercise? I’d been completing various home workouts but never could stick with anything consistent enough to make true and lasting progress. I’d get bored and begin to skip days until days became weeks.

This time, I had a very strong urge to try Supernatural again. I’d been praying for change. I knew I had to change.

I found the VR headset tucked away in a drawer in our daughter’s room, unused for who knows how long. I thought to myself, “Today is the day.” I got the headset charged up, and the rest is history.

That is the day my whole life began to change, small baby steps at a time.

I restarted my journey and this time it has been truly transformative!

I began with the “Fitness Reset” program and it really ignited a fire in me that spilled over into ALL aspects of my life. Here’s a trailer for the program:

What is Supernatural VR?

Supernatural is a fitness game that allows you to workout in the comfort of your own home. From their website they describe the workouts as:

Workouts for every level
Thousands of boxing and flow workouts with options from low, medium and high intensity, along with meditation and stretching programs for recovery.

Rekindling the Flame

Here’s what I love about Supernatural:

  • The feel of a personal coach right in the comfort of my own home
  • The encouragement – it’s worked wonders on my overall mental health!
  • New workout added daily
  • A library of thousands of workouts to choose from
  • Programs like “Fitness Reset”, “Level Up”, and “Beast Mode”, have a structured plan to help you improve.
  • I can save my favorite workouts to repeat later and try to beat my score!
  • The variety: flow, boxing, meditation, stretching
  • The variety in music: Feel like fun party hits from the 00’s? Tons of workouts to choose from. Feeling like classical symphony music today? Get it!! There are so many fun choices depending on what you need in your life and how you’re feeling.
  • Supernatural Artist Series: Playlists by Jonas Brothers, Sam Smith, Linkin Park, Muse, and more! Music is one of my therapy forms (always has been) so I think this is just one of the reasons SN is so powerfully moving to me. I hope one day they’ll add some Contemporary Christian; I haven’t found it yet if it’s there!

From the moment I put on that headset and stepped into the virtual world of Supernatural, I felt a spark ignite within me. The immersive environments, the pumping music, the satisfying swoosh of hitting targets- it all came flooding back, but this time, it felt different. More intense, more exciting. They added more workouts, more coaches, and more music.

To further prove my commitment, it’s been less than 60 days and I’ve completed 140 Supernatural workouts🎉 :

Some days I would complete just one Quick Hits (usually under 10 minutes), other days, 3-4 Quick Hits in a row – sometimes 45 minutes to an hour total. When I first started in August, I really had to push through my initial soreness (oh boy, was I sore those first few weeks!), but I felt so proud of the determination that I hadn’t felt in years. But here’s the real magic – it didn’t stop there.

Beyond the Virtual World

As I continued my daily Supernatural routines, something incredible happened.

My newfound enthusiasm for fitness began to spill over into other areas of my life.

I found myself adding other workouts to my daily routine:

I began joining my husband in his crazy-early 3am workouts at the gym.

Let me stress this: I was NOT a morning person. But I chose to become one because I’m determined to put in the work, strengthen my relationship with my husband and family, and get active and healthy, and stay healthy.

When I say I was sore the first couple of weeks in the headset, I don’t mean that lightly. I was so SORE, but a good sore. You know, the one where you feel accomplished, and know you’re sore because you got outside your comfort zone. I was using muscles to complete the workouts that I had been neglecting for a while. I pushed through the soreness and kept showing up for myself daily.

(Note: Please listen to your body and don’t overdo it, especially when you’re first starting!

If you feel pain, need to rest, REST! And most importantly, please consult with your doctor before beginning any new diet or exercise program to make sure it’s a good fit for you)

I sincerely can’t imagine not having Supernatural as part of my daily routine now – even if it’s just one Quick Hits 10-minute workout, I always fit it in happily to my routine. I usually shoot for 30 minutes to an hour daily, though!

That’s what works for me, everyone is different. Find your happy place, and HAVE FUN!

It’s important to listen to your body, push yourself when you can, and rest when you need to!

  3. Comfortable Workout Clothes: You’ll be moving a lot, so wear something that allows free movement.
  4. Clear Space: Ensure you have enough room to move your arms freely without hitting anything. I turn on a setting called Mixed Reality so I can see a little bit of my real-life surroundings.
  5. Water and a Towel: Stay hydrated and be prepared to sweat!

The Workouts

Here’s why I love this feature:

  • Shared Experience: You can see your workout buddy’s SN avatar, making it feel like you’re really exercising together.
  • Social Connection: It’s a great way to stay connected with friends and family, even if you’re miles apart. It’s also a great way to make new friends!
  • Fun Factor: Working out with a friend or team just makes everything more enjoyable! It’s like having a workout buddy right there with you, cheering you on and pushing you to do your best. Maybe one day I’ll get lucky and get to work out with one of the coaches!
